First Lieutenant Clarence A. Oliphant, Italy, 1944.

Cadet Clarence A. Oliphant of the 99th Pursuit Squadron. Oliphant gained fame for mistakenly joining a white P-38 squadron for a raid on “Hitler’s Hideaway” in 1944. “When the formation of P-38s, plus the P-51, reached the target in Southeastern, Austria, Lt. Oliphant was determined to contribute something toward the success of the mission,” said Courier war correspondent Collins George from Italy. “As the P-38s released their bombs, Oliphant put his aircraft into a dive and released both wing tanks over the target area.”
